beginning … When a child begins to dance at the Bachwell, he or she starts with a combined ballet and tap class. Classes for the youngest dancers last 50 minutes and include both ballet and tap at each session. They meet once a week for a semester of around sixteen weeks. Ballet is the foundation for all of Western dance; it gives us a common vocabulary to use. Tap is an excellent choice for young dancers as well because it is the intersection of playing an instrument and dancing, both of which come naturally to children. You may have noticed that children like making noise. We follow the RAD curriculum for ballet and the Al Gilbert syllabus for tap.
intermediate … Dancers with some experience may use their ballet/tap basis and get a little deeper, perhaps moving into jazz. We offer a 50-minute jazz-only class, based loosely on university-level dance programs, which tends toward classic jazz technique but does use some hip-hop.
